Mexico: Cancun & Playa Del Carmen
Posted on March 9, 2016
We stayed at an Airbnb in downtown cancun with a couple that owned a tortilla factory! They had a tortilla factory inside their house (you have not lived until you eat a tortilla piping hot off of the line), a pool in their backyard, and the most amazing personalities you could hope to spend time with. Fernando grilled like a pro, and Jeannie’s homemade cooking nourished our souls. They even took us down to the beach and gave us so many tips and tricks for the area (for example, we never would have known to go to Isla Mujeres if it wasn’t for Fernando’s recommendation!)
A Couch Surfer in Playa del Carmen offered to host us for an evening, which we gladly accepted. Along with the two of us, Jorge was also hosting a couple from Germany, a couple from Bulgaria (who were on their last night of a 3 YEAR trip!), and a girl from the Ukraine! Lots of great people, lots of great stories to share.
The Playa Express or Collectivo was a couple of pesos back and forth from Cancun and Playa Del Carmen for a 45 minute air-conditioned ride into the city. Transit locally in both cities are reasonable and comes every few minutes if you need a bus just raise your arm! They will stop for you – bus stop or not, room for you or not. Also, cabbies can be persuaded to take more people than there are seats for. Or, uh, so we hear.
