Switzerland: Zurich & Lausanne
Posted on March 16, 2016
Our stay in Switzerland was divided into two parts: Zurich and Lausanne. In both cities, we stayed with our CouchSurfing buddies Sam and Beat, who we met when we hosted them in Denver many moons ago (well, okay, several moons ago)! In any case, they were generous enough to both host us in their respective cities. In Zurich, we stayed with Beat, who gave us instructions on how to get to the Top of Zurich (Uetliberg), which gave us a gorgeous view of the city and lake.
After a few days exploring the picture-perfect metropolis, we took a train to the city of Lausanne to meet up with Sammy. The train was just more than 2 minutes late, which was seriously such a big deal, guys. After a day of our jaws on the floor with how stunning the city is, Beat met up with us for the weekend!
Bonus pictures of Zurich:
Unsurprisingly, transit was awesome in Switzerland. Zurich’s public transportation was slightly easier to navigate, but everything we took was clean, direct, and everything you could ask for. Make sure you have a ticket for the trains, as they are checked often. There are half priced fairs available to purchase, but are only valid for those with the discount card. We were able to get away with purchasing a couple of those and paying the difference on board if the tickets were checked, but YMMV.
Switzerland has so much to offer. We were able to go to a lovely art museum in Zurich for free by being in the right place at the right time. Lausanne is home to the Olympic Museum, which aside from just being super interesting also has the best view I’ve ever come across.
There country is known for its high standard of living and hefty price tag. We certainly experienced both while in country for about a week. We spent 2 days in Zurich and 3 in Lausanne, continually impressed by the beauty of the land and quality of the country’s products. Nick would continually turn to me to say “We should live here”, which was completely fair. The hike to the top of a mountain with fondue waiting at the top, only to make our way back into the city zig zagging through vineyards was the cherry on top of a fantastic trip.
